Neighbourhood planning scheme 'could provide benefits'

A new thinktank report has highlighted the potential benefits offered by proposed neighbourhood planning schemes, as long as they are correctly managed.
Localis has published analysis of stipulations in the Localism Bill that would allow neighbourhoods to have more of a say about developments in their area, suggesting this could foster a more positive approach to the planning process.
For the model to work, local councils would need to provide a strategic vision and operate as "honest brokers" between developers and residents, while sufficient funding provision would also be essential, reports Public Finance.
Should the scheme work out as intended and without interference from central government, it could result in better engagement with planning among local residents, the thinktank said.
Localis chief executive Alex Thomson added: "Everybody has much to gain from a more open, collaborative approach to planning."
Last week, Local Government Chronicle reported findings from Localis showing that regional authorities are seeking to commission more services externally, rather than handling them in-house.
